Supreme Court Justice D Y Chandrachudm who is best known for penning dissenting judgements in landmark cases like Aadhaar and the arrest of well-known human rights activists. Speaking at the Bombay High Court at the Justice KT desai Memorial Lecture organized by the Bombay Bar Association on the subject of ‘Why Constitution Matters’, Justice Chandrachud began by the tracing the genesisi of the constitution to the many episodes of India’s freedom struggle, including the struggle for ‘self rule’ where a ‘simple demand’ was made for a “governing document of the people, by the people and for the people”. Justice Chandrachud’s extraordinary words will surely go down in history as a measure of the kund of personal and judical intergity that make India what it is.

डॉ. न्यायमूर्ति धनंजय यशवंत चंद्रचूड़ वर्तमान में भारत के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के एक जज न्यायाधीश हैं, और 9 नवंम्बर 2022 से न्यायमूर्ति उदय उमेश ललित के उत्थान के बाद 10 नवम्बर 2024 को अपनी सेवानिवृति तक भारत के मुख्य न्यायाधीश बनेगे। वह इलाहाबाद उच्च न्यायालय के पूर्व मुख्य न्यायाधीश और बॉम्बे हाईकोर्ट के पूर्व न्यायाधीश हैं। चंद्रचूड़ 13 मई 2016 को भारत के सुप्रीम कोर्ट में जज नियुक्त हुए।

भारत गणराज्य में अब तक कुल 49 न्यायाधीशों ने मुख्य न्यायाधीशों के रूप में सेवा की हैं। न्यायमूर्ति श्री एच जे कनिया भारत के पहले मुख्य न्यायाधीश थे तथा वर्तमान मुख्य न्यायधीश न्यायमूर्ति श्री यू यू ललित लेकिन नवंबर में भारत के 50 वे मुख्य न्यायाधीश डीवाई चंद्रचूड़ बनेगे।

व्यक्तिगत जीवन

इनके पिता यंशवत विष्णु चंद्रचूड़ भारत के सुप्रीम कोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश थेे। इनकी माता प्रभा शास्त्रीय संगीतज्ञ हैं।

Justic DY Chandrachud Profile in English

Justice Chandrachud studied BA with Honours in Economics from ST Stephen’s college, New Delhi and LLB from Campus Law Centre, Delhi University. He completed his degree and a Doctrate in Juridical Sciences from Harvard Law School, USA.

He practised law at the Supreme Court and the Bombay High Court. He was designatedas the senior advocate by the Bombay High Court in Jun 1998.

He was appointed as the additional Solicitor General of India from 1998 until appointment as a Judge.

He became the judge of the Bombay High Court in March 2000. In October 2013 he was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Allahbad High Court.

He was appointed as the judge of the Supreme Court in May 2016.

व्यवसाय

चंद्रचूड़ ने बंबई उच्च न्यायालय में वकिल के रूप में अभ्यास किया था तथा संवैधानिक कानून और सार्वजनिक कानून में विशेष रूचि ली। वर्ष 1998-2000 में चंद्रचूड़ एडिशनल सोलिस्टर जनरल ऑफ इंडिया नियुक्त हुए। 29 मार्च 2000 को बंबई हाई कोर्ट में अतिरिक्त जज नियुक्त हुए। 31 अक्टुबर 2013 को इलाहाबाद हाई कोर्ट के मुख्य न्यायाधीश पद पर आसीन हुए। 13 मई 2016 को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ऑफ इंडिया के जज बने।
